Andy Warhol is one of the most famous American artists of Pop Art.

His parents are from the village of Mikova in Slovakia. In 1914 his father went to the United States where his wife joined him seven years later. Little Andy was born in Pennsylvania in 1928. He will be the last of four siblings.

He grew up in a city of great poverty. Suffering from Sydenham’s chorea disease, Andy Warhol had to stay in bed for several weeks during his schooling. It is at this time that he listens to the radio a lot, starts drawing and collects posters of big stars.

After graduating from high school, Andy Warhol studied drawing at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, where he learned all the basic techniques.

In 1949, he moved to New York and worked as a commercial artist for Glamour magazine. He later collaborated for other magazines and created window displays for the prestigious Bronwit Teller store.

Fascinated by the artistic world, he frequented the Serendipity 3 bar, where artists of all kinds, including Marilyn Monroe, met. It is in this bar that a selection of his drawings are exhibited for the first time.

Three years after moving to New York, his first exhibition is held at the Hugo Gallery. He also designs costumes for a theatre company. It was during this period that he created his emblematic platinum-coloured wig.

This mixture of art – sewing and painting – will follow him all his life.

Very inspired by comic books, he made his first advertising illustrations on this theme, such as the Before and After for Bonwit Teller’s department store. This is the beginning of his Pop Art era.

In 1962 Andy Warhol participated with other artists of the same movement in the first Pop Art event in the United States. It is the same year that he realizes his famous paintings with dollars as well as with stars such as Marlyn Monroe.

In 1964, he opened his mythical studio «The Factory» on 47th Street in New York, which was to become the epicentre of his artistic creations – paintings and film works -.

Andy Worhol left his mark on an entire generation with his Pop Art works and his work on colours. His works are world-renowned and can be found in the greatest museums.
